The general objective of the AlphaEU project is to promote the acquisition of multilingual awareness and language skills of pre-schoolers in various European countries, by developing, piloting, and implementing digital alphabet books and alphabet-related games and interactive activities. Targeted alphabets/languages include: English, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian.

The AlphaEU project aims to:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of ELL practices in a more systematic and organised way.
  • Make pedagogical ELL materials more widely available to parents and teachers.
  • Enhance equity in children’s access to ELL education.
  • Support pluralism in terms of the number of languages offered for ELL.
  • Contribute to an improved communication and collaboration between families and the school in pre-primary ELL.
  • Inform and train pre-primary staff and parents regarding the value and pedagogy of ELL.

The AlphaEU specific objectives are:

  • To develop an AlphaEU ELL approach through a well-documented, state of the art meta-research report.
  • To pilot, design, and develop 30 digital alphabet books and 30 accompanying, playful, and comparative activities in relation to 6 different European languages (English, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian).
  • To provide free access to these materials and educational approaches, by incorporating them in an on-line platform.
  • To provide e-learning training and support for at least 20 adult mediators in each participating country, bringing teachers and parents in contact through blended learning environments.
  • To implement the AlphaEU approach and materials in collaboration with 10 pre-primary teachers and 10 parents in each partner country.
  • To author and publicize at least one case study from each country, in order to evaluate, valorise, and demonstrate the AlphaEU approach and materials.
  • To pursue intense dissemination and exploitation, in order to make stakeholders aware of the AlphaEU resources, as well as the general value of playful and creative ELL.
